Mission

The mission of the Sonoma County Mayors’ Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities is to encourage and promote the hiring, retention and promotion of people with disabilities by creating a strong, friendly collaborative partnership between employers, human services agencies, local government, elected officials, individuals with disabilities and the general public in Sonoma County.

Objective

The objective of the committee is to develop and implement action programs that are consistent with the mission.

Who Supports the Committee?

The Mayor’s Committee is an independent, volunteer, self-supporting membership organization that maintains liaison with the (9) Sonoma County Mayors and Councilmenbers, California Department of Rehabilitation and the Workforce Investment Board/Sonoma County Job Link.

Who Can Be a Member?

The membership is open to anyone interested in promoting the employment and advancement of people with disabilities.  Membership will be encouraged from elected officials, representatives of government, public and private employers, organizations serving persons with disabilities and any organization or individual interested in promoting the employment of persons with disabilities.

What Are the Time Demands?

Members may work on one or more projects. Therefore, time demands will vary and are under control of the member. It is not necessary to attend every board meeting. You can attend the board meeting and/or committee meeting that addresses the project you want to move forward.

 

Each member of the committee is expected to commit time to produce one or more events, such as, Barrier Awareness Day, Annual Employers Best Practices Awards. The committee works with the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities to recruit high school student applicants for the Annual Youth Leadership Forum in July.

Executive Board

The Executive Board consists of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary elected for a two-year term.

Committees

At present, there are three subcommittees- Membership, Annual Best Practices Awards Event and Youth Leadership Forum. The Membership Committee recommends programs to increase membership. The Best Practices and Youth Leadership are described in this website.

Meetings

The Mayors' Committee meets monthly to plan activities. Each committee member is encouraged to suggest ideas for action programs and expected to work on at least one of the programs the committee decides to implement.

Administrative Support

Administrative support services are provided by Disability Services & Legal Center (DSLC).

 

Member's Employer

Membership is independent of the member's company/organization. A member may represent their company or organization.

 

The member and their employer must understand that other members of the committee may contact the member's company or organization independently in the course of committee's business.

 

Voting Privileges

Only members of record have voting privileges- no substitutes.See Bylaws below.

 

Membership Dues

Annual membership dues are ($30). The membership application form can be accessed above.
